Garrison chose to have the accompanying descriptions written by different participants in the Creative Writing Salon at LAMP. The writers were challenged with writing three things: a description, the character’s motivation in life, and a love letter. It all worked perfectly. SENSE / SELF features nine paired self-portraits, some visual, some written, and some a combination of both. The written work is a poetic essay inspired by a lifetime of sense memories, while the visual component needs only to represent some aspect of the artist’s sense of him or herself.
